My partner is going to NYC in august and as a birthday gift I wanted to get him tickets to the observatory but I’m unsure what day he’s planning on doing what attractions on and I want it to be a surprise so I don’t want to outwardly ask So can I buy a ticket without a definite date and time and he can modify this himself or do you have to have it pre-planned?

Advanced tickets have to specify a day and time. However, you can usually purchase just a day or two in advance when you are more confident of the day of the visit.

I was looking at purchasing a 3 day pass to see as many places as possible but a lot of people say that they are a rip off. We are staying close to Times Square. Also is it easy and safe on the subways? I would like to visit the Bronx, to see the steps where the Joker was filmed, is that safe on our own or would it be better to do a bus tour? Thanks for any advice.

Travelled the subways when we were there. No problems. If you purchase the 3 day pass it could make you feel like you're forced to do everything. At the time of your visit you'd probably appreciate the flexibility to make up your plans at the time. In terms of visiting the Bronx, check with your hotel when you're there to get the latest info on any safety considerations that are appropriate at the time.
