I didn’t have any proof with but not sure if the guy doing tickets was just being super nice!

Do you have to purchase a ticket ahead of time, or can you buy it there?

We went into ticket office previous day. We chose entry time as early as possible to avoid queues but soon gets busy. As a treat we recommend visiting the pump room for afternoon tea.

I think re-entry is at the discretion of the museum staff, ask when you get there. Go earlier to save any hassle.
