Yes, you can drive there on your own. There is a lot near the visitors center where you need to purchase the tickets, then you can drive up to the upper lot next to the prison entrance to take the walking tour. The Moonshine tasting (End of the Line Moonshine) is in the visitors center, there is also a restaurant in the visitors center.
