Minneapolis is the most populous city in the U.S. state of Minnesota and the seat of Hennepin County. With a population of 429,954 as of the 2020 census, it is also the 46th-most populous city in the US. The city occupies both banks of the Upper Mississippi River and adjoins Saint Paul, the state capital, to the east. Minneapolis and Saint Paul anchor the Twin Cities, a metropolitan area with 3.69 million residents. Extending into nearby Wisconsin, it is the third-most populous metro area in the Midwestern United States and the 16th-most populous in the nation. Nicknamed the "City of Lakes" due to its thirteen lakes and numerous wetlands, Minneapolis is a cultural and economic center for Minnesota and the Upper Midwest.
