Airlines around the world are scrubbing flights to the Middle East in the wake of Israel’s strikes on Iran. The skies over a swath of the region emptied as Israel, Iran, Iraq, Jordan and Syria shut their airspace and airlines rerouted.

United Airlines also suspended its Tel Aviv service but did not specify when flights between its Newark Liberty International Airport hub in New Jersey and Israel might resume. The airline canceled one outbound flight from Newark on Thursday, while another flight that was already in the air returned to New Jersey.
