Amid a storm of protest and arrests in downtown Los Angeles, immigration authorities appear to be intensifying operations across Southern California as federal officials vow to press ahead with a crackdown on undocmented workers and residents.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced the curfew on Tuesday. It encompasses a one-mile area of the city and is in effect from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. PT.

The curfew was ordered as Mayor Bass declared that nights of protests that had sometimes dissolved into vandalism and looting had reached a “tipping point.”

Following four days of escalating protests that defaced landmarks and damaged property in downtown L.A., Mayor Karen Bass imposed a regional curfew on Tuesday in an effort to restore order.

With a curfew again imposed on downtown L.A. on Wednesday, several local businesses are closing earlier, canceling events — or not changing plans at all.
