The power of the US military will be sharply on display this weekend – on two different coasts and in two very different ways.

With protests blanketing the United States over the immigration crackdown — which is to say nothing of “No Kings Day” on Saturday — boxer Ryan Garcia couldn’t sit back anymore as Los Angeles, his home, has been wracked with ICE raids, protests and upheaval.

Led by Shelley Bruce of the Heart Department, a BIPOC cultural programming organization, and 50+ other organizations, community members shared what brought them out and why it mattered.

The outburst of public dissent occurred over the weekend after ICE began raids across Los Angeles. ICE said on Saturday that its “operations in LA this week” had resulted in 118 arrests of immigrants in Southern California.

The Trump administration has paused Immigration and Customs Enforcement raids on most farms, hotels and restaurants amid complaints from such employers.
