Manipur has been witnessing ethnic conflict between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities since May 2023. More than 200 people have been killed in the conflict.

President Droupadi Murmu has imposed President's Rule in Manipur after receiving a report from the state Governor.The decision, exercised under Article 356 of the Constitution, means that the state's administrative functions will now be directly controlled by the President through the Governor.

President's rule was imposed in Manipur on Thursday, four days after Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned from his position. The assembly has also been put under suspended animation. Announcing the proclamation of the central rule,

According to reports, the governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) failed to build a consensus on Biren Singh’s successor.

Announcing the President rule, Ministry of Home Affairs said President Droupadi Murmu is of the opinion that "a situation has arisen in which the government of that state cannot be carried on in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution".
