New media” reporters and influencers cheered the White House’s announcement on Tuesday that it was expanding the press pool in the White House press briefing to podcasters, independent journalists, and social media influencers.

The White House itself has not commented on the sudden influx in applications, but The Hill newspaper reported on Wednesday that the office has received more than 7,000 requests for credentials so far.

The White House received more than 7,400 requests for credentials one day after saying it would open press briefings to content creators, influencers and podcasters.
