A missile was launched from Yemen into central Israel on Sunday morning, according to the Israeli military, in a rare instance of a missile penetrating so far into the country’s territory since its war in Gaza began.

Yemen’s Ansar Allah, commonly known as the Houthis, launched what they said was a hypersonic missile at central Israel. It caused fires, triggered air raid sirens, and sent residents running for shelter in the area around Ben Gurion Airport.

Yemeni-based Houthi militants claimed responsibility for the attack on Sunday. Israeli forces said the missile did not cause any direct injuries.

Tehran has not sent hypersonic missiles to Yemen's Houthis, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in a televised news conference on Monday, a day after the Iran-backed group said a missile it fired at Israel was a hypersonic one.

Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthi militia on Sunday claimed a ballistic missile fired at Israel and vowed further attacks. Houthi military spokesman Yehya Saree said the attack was carried out with a new hypersonic ballistic missile against an Israeli military target in Jaffa.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Monday that his country has not sent hypersonic missiles to Yemen's Houthi group. The president made the remarks at a press conference in Tehran, in response to a question from an Al Jazeera news network reporter who quoted political experts saying that Iran has supplied hypersonic missiles,
