It's Georgia's first new state park since Tallulah Gorge in 1993, and it might not have opened except for lucky timing, strong local support and the enthusiasm of people such as Archie Davis.

The board formally opened Chattahoochee Bend State Park near Newnan on July 1, and now it is now transferring Tanner State Park just down the road to Carroll County.

Chattahoochee Now The details: A 5,000-acre, 53-mile park from Atlanta to Chattahoochee Bend State Park dotted with mixed-use, public art, and nature areas—plus 20 new access points to the river.

The plan also would account for the envisioned Chattahoochee RiverLands Greenway, a 125-mile continuous trail from the Buford Dam to Chattahoochee Bend State Park in Coweta County.
