The compound eye of wild-type Drosophila individuals shows a hexagonal tile pattern, which in some mutants changes to a square tile pattern (Fig. 1).
There are also mid-size tiles, measuring 120 by 120 centimetres, and smaller tiles, measuring 30 by 120 centimetres. The designs all come in white, grey or black.
This isn’t run-of-the-mill geometry. Quasi-crystals are made by fitting together a set of shapes, including five- and 10-sided shapes, into patterns that, unlike typical tile floors, don’t repeat.
