Democrat James Andrew Malone narrowly won a special election for a Pennsylvania state Senate seat in a stretch of Republican-leaning suburbs and farming communities, scoring an upset in a territory that a Democrat hasn’t represented in the chamber for 136 years.

Malone’s victory shrinks the GOP advantage in the state senate to 27-23. In a separate election outside Pittsburgh, the Democratic candidate ran well ahead of former Vice President Kamala Harris’ margins in a Democratic seat to maintain the party’s narrow 102-101 advantage in Pennsylvania’s state House.

The Democratic win came in a district which strongly voted for President Donald Trump last November, exacerbating special election concerns for the GOP.
