UPDATED: April 19, 2016 at 11:14 PM MDT The Colorado pheasant and quail season opens Saturday with the forecast for good hunting opportunities in many areas throughout the state.

In our last installment, we examined some of this year’s new featherweight pheasant guns. This week we’re going to look at some top loads for taking roosters.

Pheasants, quail and rabbits are fair game starting Saturday. Dove season also reopens Saturday through Nov. 16. Bag limits are as follows: two cock pheasants, four rabbits, eight quail and 15 doves.

Prendergast said hunters shot about 190,000 rooster pheasants during the 2013-14 season, the lowest in recorded history. That compares to slightly under 900,000 three years earlier.

Shooting hours for pheasant and quail are 30 minutes before sunrise to sunset. Hunting permits and habitat stamps are required. The season runs through Jan. 31.

If you’re interested in hunting pheasant or quail, Kansas rules state you can start thirty minutes before sunrise and until sunset. Hunting season continues through January 31, 2023.
