Skeletal remains that washed up on several South Jersey beaches starting in 1995 have been identified as a 19th-century ship captain who was commanding a schooner bound for Philadelphia at the time of his death, bringing an end to a three-decade mystery.

DNA tests determined the remains were Henry Goodsell, whose schooner the Oriental was hauling marble to Philly to build Girard College when sunk near Brigantine in 1844.

In 1995, a mystery skull washed onto a beach in Longport, New Jersey. Four years later, additional bone fragments were discovered less than two miles away on a shore in the neighboring southern New Jersey town of Margate.
