A guard at the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center was arrested Tuesday after investigators said she assaulted an inmate last month.

Richland County Sheriff’s Deputy Sarah Merriman, a former K9 officer, was previously injured in the line of duty when a fleeing suspect hit her with his car in August, 2022.

The victim was shot in the lower body and the gunman left the scene before deputies arrived, according to the Richland County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff Leon Lott said previous incidents at the theater led him to stop sending deputies to help with security.
