Inspectors with the New Hampshire Fire Marshal's Office are investigating a pair of recent mechanical failures on busy ski lifts. On Sunday, a chair on the Flying Bear lift at Attitash detached from the steel cable. The skier on board and the chair both fell about 20 feet onto the snow. Investigators say that the skier is now recovering.

Sixty-four passengers were evacuated from a chairlift at Cannon Mountain, New Hampshire, Wednesday after a mechanical error, according to news reports and a press statement shared by the ski area. A bolt affixed to the power take-off (PTO) shaft failed on the Peabody Express Quad lift at approximately 10:13 a.

Cannon Mountain, a state-run ski area in Franconia, said “a bolt affixed to the power take-off shaft” on a ski lift failed.

A recent accident at Attitash highlighted how the fear that exists in many skiers’ heads can occasionally become reality.
