Authorities in Gabon say voters have overwhelmingly approved a new constitution more than one year after mutinous soldiers overthrew the country’s longtime president and seized power in the oil-rich Central African nation.

Gabon’s military rulers said the new constitution has been overwhelmingly approved in a referendum, according to provisional results published on Sunday. Speaking on state television, the interior minister said  91.

The results have indicated the majority of Gabon's 860,000 registered voters opted for the new Constitution that could end military rule, reported State TV. After nearly 60 years of rule, the Constitutional referendum may overthrow the Bongo family dynasty.

The constitutional change would also require presidential candidates to be exclusively Gabonese, with at least one Gabon- born parent and have a Gabonese spouse. The criterion disqualifies ousted ruler Ali Bongo Ondimba,
