As if there were any doubt whether Aryna Sabalenka’s loss in the Wimbledon semifinals brought to mind her loss in the French Open final — and its aftermath — a month ago, she made it quite clear right away.
Aryna Sabalenka said she did not want to "face that hate again" as she praised her Wimbledon conqueror Amanda Anisimova on Thursday - in stark contrast to her attitude following the French Open final when she was anything but complimentary about Coco Gauff.
Instead, a solid purple icon appears next to Sabalenka for the live scoring. The tennis star is from Minsk, the capital city of Belarus and the absence of her flag is a bit complicated. Sabalenka lives in Miami, Fla., when she is not competing in tournaments.
Wimbledon 2025 has had its moments of drama. Aryna Sabaleka, the world's #1 tennis player, helped deliver her share of it when she won a tense match against German Laura Siegemund, Sabalenka said after the July 8 match that she thought she was going to lose after the first set.
Last summer, Sabalenka, then-ranked No. 3, beat No. 6 Jessica Pegula in the first Cincinnati Open women's singles final featuring two top 10 opponents since 2017. Sabalenka and Pegula are tied for the most WTA titles this season with three each.
