Visiting the factory where Peeps are made, in Bethlehem, Pa., is a true Willy Wonka experience. The building is crammed with pipes full of marshmallow and hoses full of sugar.

That helped him earn the nickname “Father of Peeps.” Originally created for Easter, Peeps now come in shapes for other holidays. Easter accounts for about 75% of Peeps sales each year.

After designing the machine that deposits the Peeps Marshmallow chicks, which was used for over 50 years, Born also invented Hot Tamales after reworking Mike and Ike candies.
