NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A rare frigid storm charged through Texas and the northern Gulf Coast on Tuesday, blanketing New Orleans and Houston with snow that closed highways, grounded nearly all flights and canceled school for more than a million students more accustomed to hurricane dismissals than snow days.

A winter storm is expected to bring extreme cold and possible record breaking snow to parts of the deep south.

From Pensacola to Jacksonville, snowfall was reported ranging from inches-deep to a light dusting. A whopping 9.8 inches was recorded in Milton, Fla. a city about 23 miles northeast of Pensacola. In nearby Molino, 9.5 inches of snow was recorded.

Winter snow storms have covered swathes of the southern US in thick snow, breaking records across the region. Despite some fatalities and airport closures, residents have been enjoying the unusual weather.

As heavy snow, sleet and freezing rain hit parts of the Deep South, a blast of Arctic air plunged much of the Midwest and the eastern U.S. into a deep freeze.
