The trade came only hours after the Mets placed infielder Nick Madrigal on the 60-day injured list. Madrigal fractured his left shoulder Sunday against the Washington Nationals. Chicago designated Canario for assignment after signing veteran infielder Justin Turner last week.

It was moderately surprising that the Cubs cut Canario loose. They acquired the righty-hitting outfielder alongside Caleb Kilian in the 2021 deadline deal that sent Kris Bryant to the Giants. Canario popped 37 home runs during his first full minor league season in the Chicago system.

The New York Mets acquired outfielder Alexander Canario in a trade with the Chicago Cubs and placed infielder Nick Madrigal on the 60-day injured list Monday.

The measure, which passed three months after late Mayor Harold Washington endorsed a “middle course” plan for 18 night games, also meant Wrigley Field could host the 1990 All-Star Game.

New York Mets starter Sean Manaea is expected to begin the season on the injured list because of a right oblique strain.
