WASHINGTON — The Senate totaled California’s signature climate change policy — mandating new cars sold be electric by 2035 — in a 51-44 vote Thursday morning. Gov. Gavin Newsom immediately vowed to sue to keep California’s emission standards in place.

According to a new analysis by the International Energy Agency (IEA), EV sales will account for one-quarter of the new cars sold worldwide by the end of 2025. The IEA says electric car sales will surpass 20 million units. That would mark a significant increase over 2024 when customers purchased 17 million EVs.
Thursday’s Senate vote to block California’s ban on sales of gas cars is the latest GOP effort to stop state climate policies.
More than one in four cars sold globally this year will be electric, according to a new report from the International Energy Agency, marking a significant milestone in the shift away from fossil fuel transport.
