The population of Sudan is predominantly Muslim and the country's official languages are Arabic and English. Even before the war started, Sudan was one the poorest countries in the world.

Tens of thousands have crossed into neighbouring countries, including Chad, Egypt, Ethiopia and South Sudan (see map 1). The UN expects as many as 800,000 refugees in the coming weeks and months.
