Summer rain has been a frequent occurrence and continues to put a dent in drought conditions in the state, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.
(Des Moines) -- Recent rains have washed out nearly all abnormally dry conditions in Iowa.
The U.S. Drought Monitor map shows whether Iowa is putting a dent in the state's drought conditions. The newest Drought Monitor report from May 22 shows 46% of Iowa with no dryness or drought.
Cumulatively the drought map is showing signs of less stress in Plains each week, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor.
Central and southwestern Iowa, in particular, continue to benefit from regular rainfall. Western Iowa, which has had the most persistent drought conditions, had significant improvements this week.
The DNR’s Jessica Reese McIntyre says western, central and northwest Iowa got the most rain. She says northwest Iowa in particular had areas of severe drought.
Select areas of Iowa are under moderate drought conditions, particularly in the western and eastern parts of the state, expanding as far south as Sioux and Jackson counties.
