State officials say the highly pathogenic avian influenza – more commonly known as bird flu – is widespread in much of the state.

An avian flu outbreak that has killed birds across Massachusetts in recent weeks is suspected to have spread to birds in Boston and Brookline, according to officials.

There have not been any cases among commercial flocks in Massachusetts, said Agricultural Commissioner Ashley Randle.

Massachusetts officials announced Wednesday that bird flu is now considered to be “widespread” in the state and urged the public to avoid handling birds or other animals that are dead or appear sick.
