At least 10 people are dead and many more injured as several fires broke out across Southern California amid historically dry and windy conditions.

To the northeast, the Eaton Fire erupted in the Angeles National Forest, claiming at least five lives in the suburb of Altadena and damaging or destroying a likely 6,672 buildings as of early Thursday morning, according to the satellite analysis.

California’s insurance commissioner won’t allow canceled or nonrenewed policies in and around the fire zones for a year.

Decreased winds have helped slow progression of the fire, as officials prepare for the return of strong winds early next week.

The Eaton and Palisades fires have burned more than 34,000 acres in Los Angeles County − an area larger than the city of San Francisco. The two fires cover the widest area among five fires in the vicinity and are raging through densely populated zones.

Firefighters made significant gains Thursday at slowing the spread of the major fires, but overall containment remained far out of reach.

"We are not screwing around with this, we do not want anyone taking advantage of our residents that have already been victimized," Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said.
