Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde said this week she has had “people wish me dead” after she called on President Trump to “have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now” during an inaugural prayer service at the National Cathedral.

On Tuesday, Episcopal Bishop of Washington, D.C., Mariann Edgar Budde spoke directly to Trump in a national prayer service following his inauguration on Monday, saying, “In the name of our God, I ask you to have mercy upon the people in our country who are scared now,” including undocumented immigrants and LGBTQ+ children.

The Right Rev. Mariann Budde, the spiritual leader of the Episcopal Diocese of Washington, has voiced concern about Donald Trump’s language and conduct for years.

President Trump spent the afternoon at a service at the National Cathedral where Right Reverend Mariann Edgar Budde gave a service on unity. She said that contempt can fuel social media and political campaigns and can be “a dangerous way to lead a country.

Mariann Budde, 65, is the Episcopalian bishop who confronted Trump during the National Prayer Service. Trump and Vice President JD Vance were in attendance as part of their first full day in the Oval Office.
