Murray State and No. 15 UCLA saw their first action of the 2025 Men's College World Series on Saturday, where the former’s ongoing Cinderella story hit a bit of a snag in Game 3 after the Bruins’ 6-4 win.

The Murray State Racers outlasted Duke to make the first College World Series in program history with a win June 9.

Murray State took a chance on a 33-year-old junior college assistant. Seven years later, Skirka has the Racers on the sport's biggest stage.

Dan Skirka is currently in his seventh season as Murray State's head coach, but his history with the team dates back longer than that. Skirka was originally an assistant coach at Murray State from 2009-14 before he left the school to become an assistant at Walters State Community College.

That was followed by a couple of seasons at powerhouse Walters State Community College in Morristown, Tennessee. Science Hill High School graduate Landon Knack – who won a World Series ring as a rookie pitcher with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024 – was among his teammates.
