The family of a 22-year-old East Bay man says he was fatally stabbed in downtown San Jose early Sunday while trying to protect a friend who was being attacked.

A woman was charged with involuntary manslaughter after the Sunday morning blaze that destroyed a commercial building on North 27th Street.

SAN JOSE — Firefighters responded to multiple fires south of the San Jose Mineta International Airport on Tuesday afternoon, authorities said. The blazes were reported at 4:21 p.m., and forward progress was stopped at 5:08 p.m., according to a social media post from the San Jose Fire Department. The fires received a tier one response.

A man accused of fatally shooting a woman as she walked her dog with her boyfriend in San Leandro had allegedly asked the couple for directions before opening fire, according to court records.

First responders were unable to safely search the burning building on Sunday, but police said there were "multiple indicators" that a victim was inside.
