The Joseon dynasty is under duress in the Korean historical drama Captivating the King, from powerful outside invaders, but also the scheming and plotting of its always competing royal court.

That’s where the paebaek ceremony comes in. Dating back to the 1300s and the beginning of the Joseon dynasty, the paebaek is a moment during the wedding to focus entirely on family.
