Michael E. Schmidt, 47, a lawyer at the Schmidt Firm in Dallas, reported to an employee at his building early Thursday morning that his apartment was being burglarized, police said.

Schmidt also had a real connection with people, his friend and fellow lawyer Randy Johnston said. “The clients that hired Michael didn’t just get his head, they got his heart,” Johnston said.

Schmidt will take over the role of district attorney on Aug. 1. He won the May election and was scheduled to start in January 2021 before Underhill announced his retirement on June 16.
