From the 1930s to the 1970s, the Sammamish Slough was the unlikely location of a day of boat races held every April on that narrow body of water connecting Lake Sammamish and Lake Washington.

The slough runs from Lake Sammamish, which borders Bellevue, through Redmond and Bothell. Turner found a hands-on learning opportunity through a community partnership with Puget Soundkeeper Alliance.
The Sammamish Slough Race was run by the Seattle Outboard Association from 1933 to 1976. Sixty-three turns awaited the racers along the 13-mile course from Lake Washington to Lake Sammamish.
