Columbus Public Library is bringing the fantasy of visiting a tropical island a little closer to home — with books.
In fiction, the stranded setting, wherever it may occur, often an island, is an old one. Robinson Crusoe, Daniel Defoe’s 1719 book, is considered by many to be the first English-language novel.
The book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen is about 14-year-old Brian who is on the way to Canada on a plane but suddenly the pilot dies. The plane crashes, and it leaves Brian stranded on an island by himself.
