A beloved local tradition is nearing its end for the season, with its final day Feb. 23. As of Feb. 20, 752 spearers have come off the ice victorious throughout the Lake Winnebago system, according to updates from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources.

Driving around Lake Winnebago, there are fewer and fewer shacks every day, but spearers taking to the ice continue to say that when you are able to find a good pocket of water clarity, it will stick around for a good portion of the day,

The Payne’s Point Bar & Grill registration station in Neenah processed the most sturgeon of the day for Lake Winnebago with 25 fish, followed by the Downtown Oshkosh station with 21. The Poygan station led the way for the Upriver Lakes with 53 sturgeon registered.

As of Feb. 16, the Lake Winnebago system has seen 640 successful spearers so far, with Upriver Lakes getting closer to its harvest cap.

Despite weather and poor water clarity, spearers are still finding success in the Lake Winnebago system. Almost 30 sturgeon have exceeded 100 pounds.
