Officials are asking Panhandle residents to avoid being on the roads. Freezing temperatures mean icy, dangerous conditions.

When Southern states get snow, some locals make a homemade treat known as snow ice cream. It’s a mostly foreign concept in Houston, where snowfall is rare. So on this historic winter occasion, we gave it a try.

“A lot of these roads, you look at it and it gives a false impression that it’s safe. We want to discourage folks from travelling these roads because underneath the snow is a lot of ice right now. Luckily during the daytime it is melting down, but we anticipate it to freeze,” said Deputy Chief Rowell.

With freezing temperatures holding firm, much of Houston remains at a standstill, as schools, businesses and many roads remained closed Wednesday morning. State of play: Driving on roads is still not advised as melted snow has refrozen.
