The US president’s move to revoke the tax exemption for small parcels from China has spurred other governments to do likewise.
The European Union has proposed a two-euro flat fee on billions of small parcels sent directly to people's homes, which mainly come from China at the moment. The new tax would mean that packages worth less than 150 euros (£126) are no longer customs-free.
As part of that reform, the EU will also scrap its own “de minimis” exemption from tariffs for parcels worth less than €150. That will force sellers on the online platforms to register for VAT, making them liable for goods quality as importers for the first time.
