Freeze warning, cold advisory? Be familiar with these official winter weather terms
The National Weather Service changed several of its winter weather terms in October 2024. Here is what they new terms mean.
A Cold Weather Advisory tonight, a Winter Storm Watch on Tuesday
A Winter Storm Watch is in place from Tuesday evening through Wednesday early afternoon. At this point, all types of precipitation are looking possible (rain, snow, sleet and freezing rain). Impacts to travel and power are also looking possible.
Update: Winter weather advisory for 3 N.J. counties until early Monday morning – up to 5 inches of snow
On Sunday at 3:31 p.m. an updated winter weather advisory was issued by the National Weather Service in effect until Monday at 4 a.m. for Hudson, Essex and Union counties.
Northern Erie and Southern Erie under a winter weather advisory until early Monday evening – up to 7 inches of snow
On Sunday at 3:23 a.m. a winter weather advisory was issued by the National Weather Service valid from 4 p.m. until Monday 4 p.m. for Northern Erie and Southern Erie.
Cold weather warning in place for freezing temps on Sunday night
Many a Portlander woke up to crunchy lawns and frosted windshields on Sunday, after temperatures dipped down into the mid 20s overnight. The sunshine should wipe away that frost. The National Weather Service predicts clear skies with a high around 45 degrees on Sunday.
Update: Winter weather advisory issued for 4 N.J. counties until 1 a.m. Monday – up to 5 inches of snow
On Sunday at 5:33 a.m. the National Weather Service issued an updated winter weather advisory valid from 10 a.m. until Monday 1 a.m. for Salem, Gloucester, Camden and Burlington counties.
Cold Weather Advisory in place, light snow possible late Monday
Temperatures fell to near 20 degrees on Sunday morning with wind chills in the single digits. As a result, the Cold Weather Advisory will remain in effect until 9 a.m. Monday.
