Oct 9, 2017 · Township art has been an integral part of South Africa’s long struggle for freedom and was, in effect, shaped and moulded by the politics of social change. Aspirant black artists chose to depict their oppressive realities in robust, colourful artworks which were, and still are, completely unique to the region.

Sekoto illustrated township life and black culture in his artworks, which initiated the prominent township art genre recognizable in South African art. He later lived in Sophiatown, areas of which were later bulldozed by the Apartheid government.

In this series of fifteen prints, Sam Nhlengethwa has turned his focus onto the townships of South Africa. Township life has been an important source of inspiration for Black South African artists since the early 1920s.

Mongezi Gum – (Gum Mongezi Mongshai, born in Langa, 23 September 1970) is a South African township artist, working in painting. His exhibits have been displayed mostly in South Africa.
