The West Virginia State Capitol is the seat of government for the U.S. state of West Virginia, and houses the West Virginia Legislature and the office of the Governor of West Virginia. Located in Charleston, West Virginia, the building was dedicated in 1932. [2]

These tours begin at the Tours and Information Desk at the Lower Rotunda of the State Capitol Building. Tours are offered on Thursdays and Fridays, starting at 9 a.m. with the last tour scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Please call Tour Supervisor Mary Ann Long at 304-558-4839 for reservations and information.

Before the capitol was in its current location in Charleston, several West Virginia cities had served as the capitol location for the State of West Virginia. The capitol was first located in Wheeling from 1863-1870 in the Linsly Institute Building. It was moved to downtown Charleston from 1870-1875.

Where do I enter the State Capitol building (Building 1)? Visitors may enter Building 1 at either of the Directed Public Access Points, located midway through the East and West wings. Please see below for information about the process for entering the building.

Identical chandeliers comprised of ten thousand pieces of rock crystal each, hang from the skylights in the center of the chambers. The lawmakers’ desks and the speaker’s and president’s daises were built of West Virginia black walnut.

The West Virginia Capitol Complex is an 18-acre (7.3 ha) historic district located along Kanawha Blvd., E., in Charleston, West Virginia. It dates from 1925 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974.
