The West Virginia State Museum features a central show path, 26 Discovery Rooms and two Connections Rooms. Visitors who follow the show path from prehistory to the 21st century will spend approximately 45 minutes to an hour in the museum.

The West Virginia State Museum, formerly the West Virginia Science and Culture Center, is a history, culture, art, paleontology, archaeology and geology museum at the West Virginia Capitol Complex in Charleston, West Virginia.

Located in the Cultural Center, this interesting museum traces the history of West Virginia through a series of exhibits containing everything from an extensive collection of antique hats donated by a local school teacher to the telescope George Washington used to survey lands within the state.

Our museums seek to collect, preserve, present, promote and document West Virginia’s rich culture, art, paleontology, archaeology and geology – The West Virginia State Museum, Camp Washington-Carver, Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex, and West Virginia Independence Hall.

Take a journey through time as you trek from a pre-historic coal forest into early western settlement and present-day wonders. Following a chronological and interactive "show path," special exhibits with sound and lighting illustrate pivotal moments in West Virginia's cultural, industrial and natural history.

The West Virginia State Museum is proud to offer a variety of educational activities to enhance your museum visit. From scavenger hunts to Discovery Room quests and developing young writers to learning through multimedia, we have something for groups of all ages and sizes.

The museum is open without charge to all visitors and guests can choose a guided tour or walk at their own pace through the museum’s twenty-six rooms of exhibits. The museum rotates some of their exhibits, displaying different items from its collection of 60,000 items.

The Culture Center is home to the West Virginia State Museum which offers a variety of programs and exhibits that preserve and share the culture and history of the Mountain State and its people. The complex is also home to the state's archives and library, the state historic preservation office, and offices of the West Virginia Library Commission.
