On 9 May 1945, Islanders woke to the news they had longed for. German forces had surrendered at sunrise, and the five-year-long Occupation of the Islands was over. As news spread across the Island, jubilant crowds of Islanders flocked to the St Peter Port seafront to greet British forces.
